They work in private and commercial settings to help ensure the function of these systems. The technician’s job is to keep air moving through a building at the correct rate to minimize heat loss or gain. HVAC/R technicians must have the necessary skills to manage and troubleshoot HVAC systems. The technicians are responsible for making sure that the AC cools buildings and the proper distribution of heat. They get to work in all types of industries, from hospitals to hotels. They keep buildings, homes and offices safe and comfortable. The HVAC/R technicians should also be able to identify piping, valves and tubing systems. They should understand basic codes that affect the installation of new equipment or repairs in older buildings.

HVAC/R Technicians should have the following skills:

1. Understanding of HVAC systems.
2. Basic electricity.
3. Understanding of refrigeration and air conditioning systems, including how to control them; understanding the indoor air quality issues that arise from poor HVAC controls.
4. Knowledge of safety codes-such as electrical, fire safety, building code compliance.
5. Knowledge of equipment like motors, compressors, valves; know how to install an air handler or furnace.
