Medical Assistant Skills You’ve Already Mastered As A Parent

Are you considering becoming a Medical Assistant or entering the healthcare industry but not sure if you have the skills or time? Are you a parent ready to get back into the workforce to help support your family and loved ones? Becoming a Medical Assistant as a parent may be easier than you think. Here is a list of Medical Assistant skills you’ve probably already mastered as a parent.

Organization

Medical Assistants need to be very organized, because even the smallest mistake or miscommunication can put someone’s health in jeopardy. Planning out your day can make life easier. You may encounter many stressful situations, but remaining calm will help both you and your patient. As a parent, you have to stay organized to ensure that you don’t forget anything and so the kids are taken care of, even if it seems impossible.

Empathy

Medical Assistants and parents need empathy. As a Medical Assistant, you may be required to talk to scared patients and they may need reassurance everything will be okay. Showing patients that you genuinely care for their health is crucial for Medical Assistants. As a parent, it’s easy to show empathy for your children when they’re having a bad day or need help through difficult situations. Sitting down with your kids and showing you genuinely care for their health and wellbeing comes second nature, and as a Medical Assistant, it should also come as second nature.

Multi-Tasking

Medical Assistants are often expected to be a jack-of-all-trades, whether you’re in a small office or a large hospital. One day you may be required to give medical assistance and care for a patient, and the next you may be taking vitals. Mastering the art of multi-tasking and staying organized as a Medical Assistant is extremely important. If you’re a parent, you can multi-task. Plain and simple. You’re cooking dinner with one hand and holding the baby in the other. Do you have more than one kid? You’ve mastered the art of multi-tasking.

Communication

Communication is an essential part of any job in the healthcare industry. As a Medical Assistant, you are often communicating with doctors, nurses, administrators and patients. Good communication is essential, especially when you have to explain procedures to help a patient better understand what is going on. Communicating with a child can sometimes be difficult but it is critical and an essential part of parenting. Good communication with your children will help them grow up to be better people too.

Customer Service

Providing customer service to patients will be more important than ever. Because Medical Assistants are often the first and last contact a patient has during a visit, much of the customer service responsibility is a function of the Medical Assistant’s role. You want your children to be happy. Sometimes children misbehave. Yelling at them and sending them to their room probably won’t make them behave any better. So, it’s important to have good customer service skills to explain what they did wrong and why it made you upset. Having patience with patients and children both lead to good customer service.
